Ever heard of Lydia 'Squid' Morgan? Australia's up and coming mural designer.
I wanted to write about this bright new artist as her vibrant designs are just the pick me up we all need during Covid-times.
Ever since I have known this artist she has never been happier than when creating new things, it is therefore no surprise to me that her current works are as quirky and original as you like. Her principal subject matters are women and nature, but if you look more widely at her work you will find other recurring details such as fruit and coffee. As well as mural work Morgan has worked on Digital, Screen Printing and painting projects.
She has already been commissioned to paint university campus murals as well as new apartment building lobbies (as above). Who wouldn't want to come home to this exciting lobby every evening?

Le chat qui fume- simplicity, clean lines and off-beat touches make these pieces fresh and modern. This cat is one of my favourites in all of its comic simplicity!

To me, the undulating female forms in Morgan's art are reminiscent of Gaugin's Tahitian beauties. These nudes celebrate 'romanesque' female bodies. Confident and empowering depictions of women are just what the art scene needs at this time of development in the perception of women and their bodies.

Gaugin, Reclining Tahitian Women, 1894
Morgan's art is multi-cultural, making the relationships between ethnic groups a prominent theme. This style of art is very apt in a society which is becoming increasingly culturally aware and equality focussed. Morgan's art is relatable to most contemporary cultures, particularly younger generations.
